‘Internet of Things’ was first published in 1985 by Peter T. Lewis, which means ‘Sensors and actuators embedded in physical objects are linked through wired and wireless networks.’. To put it simple, it is the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. This technology has been around for a few decades, but the development in Hong Kong has been lagging.
Our Internet of Things (IoT) project involves IoT application in farming, which enables us to deal with different problems by utilizing various real-time data collected. We apply IoT to hydroponics and aquaponics by establishing a real-time remote monitoring system on the farm and the greenhouse. This helps us to collect accurate and timely data including pH values, air pressure, wind speed, temperature, etc. Efficiency and productivity of the traditional agricultural industry can be boosted. Besides less human resources and efforts needed, the data can be presented more precisely at an economical price with the technology of front-end data collection.
It is an undeniable fact that the popularity of IoT will soar in the foreseeable future. As one of the pioneers, we wish to contribute to the industry development of IoT in Hong Kong through merging the technology with the present business operations. As we would like to introduce IoT to the primary and secondary schools for the STEM education, we partnered with charitable organization to invent the education version for aquaponics. The students can collect and analyze data easily. Thus, a green lifestyle mindset can be bred and a flexible utilization of knowledge is encouraged.
